Urinary tract infection affects most women. About 70% of women will experience UTI at any point of her life even during pregnancy .

UTI is common during pregnancy. As a result of the increased weight inside the uterus, it can block the drainage that can cause infection in the urinary tract.

This kind of infection however is very treatable. If you suspect bladder infection, you should consult your medical practitioner so as proper diagnostic tests can be executed immediately. Some of the tests that may be required from you are urinalysis and urine culture. Urine culture is a procedure where the specimen is analyzed to find what strain of bacteria that has caused the infection. This is often done to persons with recurring UTI.

The symptoms of UTI during pregnancy are the same even if you are not pregnant. However, there is an added risk as the baby inside the womb can be affected. Some of the effects of bladder infection are low birth weight and early childbirth.

UTI may be present when there is pain while urinating accompanied with blood or mucus in the urine, pain in the lower abdomen, feeling of urinating often and when the urine looks cloudy and may have strong odor.

It is important that when you doubt that you have this kind of infection, you should set an appointment with your doctor and submit yourself to diagnosis. Early diagnosis of UTI can prevent the bacteria from spreading to the kidney. Bladder infection can be treated with proper care and with antibiotics where dosage is determined by the physician to a safe level that will not affect the baby in the womb.

Below are some of the means you can do to prevent UTI when pregnant:

1. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.

2. Develop the habit of urinating as soon as possible and empty your bladder when urinating.

3. Wear cotton underwear or pantyhose.

4. Avoid using bath tubs when taking a bath, use showers instead.

5. When wiping after bowel movement, wipe from front to back.

Urinary tract infection during pregnancy is very treatable when diagnosed early. Yet prevention is still better than any other treatment available to ensure your good health and that of the baby inside the womb.
